Grey's Anatomy Season 16 Episode 9 Review: Let's All Go to the Bar

at .

Apparently, we can't have nice things.

Meredith returned to GSM on Grey's Anatomy Season 16 Episode 9, but there were other more pressing matters to process throughout the hour.

Nothing is what it seems, and everything sucks.

A New Challenge - Grey's Anatomy Season 16 Episode 9

It's going to be a hell of a ride when Grey's returns in January, and we can expect another one of those crossovers with Station 19.

What do you think? Is the show getting better at incorporating Station 19 characters into the fold? If you weren't inclined to watch it or never have, are you reconsidering?

The series dropped a few bombs before closing out the hour, and it's a lot to process.

A Baby at Station 19 - Grey's Anatomy

First, the increase in pregnancies was an irritation. It seemed as though everyone was getting pregnant just for the kicks, and it was less than ideal.

But then, we were forced to deal with it, so we did. Once you adjusted to the pregnancies, the next concern was knowing either Amelia or Bailey would end up with a high-risk pregnancy or lose their child.

Miranda: Best way to fight fear is with information, you can't fix what you don't know.
Amelia: Pregnancy club just got less fun.

It was a case for either woman. Bailey would be considered high-risk because of her age. Amelia had a previous history of troubled pregnancy.

Bailey's Loss - Tall - Grey's Anatomy Season 16 Episode 9

Either way, it would be heartbreaking if these two women, who were both excited by the prospect of having a child, were to face something as tragic as a miscarriage.

It isn't Grey's Anatomy until they rip our hearts out and stomp on them for good measure, so it wasn't a matter of which one of these ladies would miscarry, but who?

Ben: What happened? Miranda?!
Captain Hererra: I'll be right outside if you need me.
Carina: I am so sorry.

The obvious choice was Amelia, who has gone nearly half of her pregnancy without getting an ultrasound.

She's a smart woman, and as a doctor, she knows better, but she didn't want to hear any bad news. She was terrified of what an ultrasound would say.

Compassionate Amelia - tall - Grey's Anatomy Season 16 Episode 7

Bailey's advice to Amelia couldn't be better. When it comes to health issues and the concerns of a baby, it's better to know what you're dealing with, then not.

Bailey was the optimistic one, and what she got for her trouble was a miscarriage. Regardless of how you feel about Bailey or her pregnancy, this is the most devastating thing ever.

It's made worse knowing she continued with her day. She couldn't take a moment to grieve, and she had to distance herself from Ben and left him to do so by himself.

Pushing Through the Pain - Tall - Grey's Anatomy Season 16 Episode 9

She had to walk the halls as if nothing happened, and bumping into her pregnancy buddy, Amelia, was painful. You could see it all over her face.

She knew Amelia was afraid of getting tested, so she had to put up a front so as not to scare Amelia. If Amelia found out about Bailey's miscarriage, she never would've gone to see Carina.

She had to be tough without feeling? It's something Bailey is familiar with doing, but it's not sustainable, given the circumstances. She's having a difficult season.

Bailey's Secret - Tall - Grey's Anatomy Season 16 Episode 5

The twist was something affecting Amelia's pregnancy too. In this case, since finding out Amelia didn't get ultrasound was brand-new information, it came along with suspicion.

The suspicion was confirmed when Carina stated how many weeks Amelia is.

All this time, Amelia (and most us) assumed (or hoped) the baby was Link's child. She was confident it was his kid, and it never crossed her mind it belonged to Owen.

I know that this is a loss for you, but I'm asking you to leave me alone for now.

Miranda

She and Link have been through so much together. Their journey is one of the highlights of the season.

New Parents? - Tall - Grey's Anatomy Season 16 Episode 2

They were too happy for their world not to implode.

While it was relief learning the baby was healthy, it was replaced with dread. How is she going to tell the man she loves that she's possibly pregnant (a girl is still keeping her fingers crossed) by her ex?

How did Owen go from wanting children and not having one to three of them? What kind of backwoods craziness is this?

Teddy, I want a life with you. I'd marry you tomorrow. Owen has a baby with you and he hasn't even proposed. Are you really sure you want to close this door?

Tom

What does she do? Link is thrilled about a child, and he's a good enough guy where he would come to accept this news and continue with his relationship and make the best of it.

Owen is Hurt - tall - Grey's Anatomy Season 16 Episode 7

It's a lot to process, though. Also, at what point does someone like Link reach his limits?

How long can he be the best guy?

Amelia and Owen are back on decent terms and treating each other like respectable adults. What happens when he finds out the truth?

It also poses an intriguing question about the state of his relationship with Teddy. As much as he loves her, he did come across jealous when Amelia told him she was pregnant.

Mom Fun - tall - Grey's Anatomy Season 16 Episode 6

He was hurt when he thought she didn't want HIS baby. How will he respond to learning the child is his?

Tom is already waiting in the wings. He still carries a torch for Teddy, and he's adamant about waiting for her. If Teddy learns Owen is having another child with his ex, then will it be the thing to drive her back into Tom's arms?

Oh, Tom. Let it go, brother. At this point, you deserve better than this situation.

Teddy is right; somewhere, there's a woman who can give him everything he deserves. He needs to find her.

Glove Check - Tall - Grey's Anatomy Season 16 Episode 6

Not only was their conversation a nuisance because of our dearest Tom not learning how to let something go, but neither of them thought to followup with Maggie.

Everyone knows about Sabi. She's not doing well. She didn't even keep it together or make it into the courtroom at Meredith's hearing.

I had a bad feeling. I can't be a surgeon if I don't trust my own gut.

Maggie

She second-guessed her self, and she lost faith in her abilities while practicing medicine. It was apparent when she enlisted Teddy's help in the first place.

Maggie's Burden - Grey's Anatomy Season 16 Episode 7

The OR was the one place where she felt invincible. It's where all of her confidence lies.

Without it, she's lost and a shell of who she is. It's disconcerting. If she can't practice medicine and excel, then what does it mean for her?

Tom: Pierce, what happened in that OR?
Maggie: I would like to tender my resignation effective immediately.

When things got hairy in the OR, she quit. She doesn't trust herself or her abilities anymore.

Neither Tom nor Teddy pulled her aside and had her talk things through. She was the chief of Cardio, and they're losing doctors like flies.

Camping Not Glamping - Tall - Grey's Anatomy Season 15 Episode 14

Isn't that something worth discussing? They went about their conversation and day as nothing happened, and Tom's solution was to replace Maggie with Teddy without batting an eyelid.

It was odd, and who knows what this will mean for Maggie going forward.

It made you long for one of those sister moments, but both women were preoccupied.

Hayes: Who are you exactly?
Mer: Meredith Grey Chief of General Surgeon.
Hayes: Oh, Grey. I've heard of you. You're the one who got yourself and half the staff fired yeah?

Cristina had a package for Meredith, and everyone but Mer realized that Mr. Tall, Dark, and Handsom was it.

Cristina's Package - Tall - Grey's Anatomy Season 16 Episode 9

Hayes is hot, with an accent, and he's good at his job. He's also a bit of an asshole, and he was giving Meredith the business. In other words, he was instantly likable.

Unfortunately, it seems like they're going to toy with the idea of him being a romantic possibility for Mer. He might be more intriguing than DeLuca.

He's not impressed with her, and he's her equal. However, at this rate, let somebody else have him, dammit!

Renegade - tall - Grey's Anatomy Season 16 Episode 8

DeLuca is waiting in the wings and regretting his decision. It's frustrating how Link and Nico were telling him he was wrong for how he left things with Mer.

He wasn't wrong; it was a mature decision, and it was putting himself first. It's something you would advise anyone if you cared about them.

He did the right thing, but now he feels guilty about it, and McIrish is here to stir up trouble and has caught Meredith's eye.

Jealous DeLuca - Tall - Grey's Anatomy Season 16 Episode 9

She's intrigued by him, you can already tell. It went back to the basics, and he summed up their interactions well when he gave Jamie advice on her love life hours after scaring the hell out of the kid.

Sometimes, boys will be mean to the girls they like.

OK. McIrish made a hell of an impression.

Different Paths - tall - Grey's Anatomy Season 16 Episode 8

After the damn near nauseating Meredith Grey worship service during Grey's Anatomy Season 16 Episode 8, it was satisfying when he claimed he didn't know who she was and was unimpressed.

His line about her being the doctor who got herself and others fired was priceless. It raised her hackles and tapped into her competitive spirit.

Listen, Dr. Whoever you are, this is my house. You're a guest in my home. I got this.

Mer

Hate to say it, but it's something she doesn't get from DeLuca. What's with the male Ped doctors being total dicks with a weird knack for interacting with children when it comes down to it?

Feeling Torn - Grey's Anatomy Season 16 Episode 8

He had some of the same vibes as Alex back in the day.

We probably won't have Hayes for long, but it's going to be enjoyable having him around at all.

Meredith got the hero's welcome, but they were still treating Levi like trash for doing his job. GSM and the people in it are the worst. It's not the least bit shocking that Levi is catching more hell than Meredith, but it's not less infuriating.

Levi Shunned - tall - Grey's Anatomy Season 16 Episode 9

At least he gets sweet rewards from Nico. Nico is still an underdeveloped character whose personality changes with the weather, and he's only designed to be Levi's love interest, but they are adorable together.

Richard and Gemma are not. Why is Gemma still around?

Richard knows Catherine is living about Gemma, and he knows Gemma is interested in him. Nevertheless, he's still there meeting with her in private and walking around the hospital like she wasn't trying to break up his marriage, and Catherine isn't assuming the worst.

Xander: Can you wait right here while I page Dr. Webber, he was having coffee with his life, and I don't want to interrupt him.
Catherine: I am his wife.

What is he thinking? It's ludicrous.

Queen Catherine - Tall - Grey's Anatomy Season 16 Episode 9

Catherine had the funniest moments of the hour. She was tossing around her name and esteem like nobody's business, and when Xander made the mistake of calling Gemma his wife, she about lost it.

It makes no sense that Richard isn't talking to her; they're too old to be this childish with not communicating.

Catherine was left to assume the worst and talk things over with Jackson of all people who shouldn't give relationship advice to a gnat, let alone his mother.

Vic: I'm Victoria Hughes, Station 19.
Catherine: What is that a TV channel?

Catherine's reaction to Jackson canoodling with Vic was priceless. Her line about Station 19 being a TV station brought me to tears laughing so hard.

Vickson - Tall - Grey's Anatomy Season 16 Episode 9

She's an expert shade thrower.

It was satisfying that someone was willing to say something about his relationship with Vic and how quickly it happened.

Vic's characterization on this series continues to be questionable. However, they did well with the other Station 19 characters.

Catherine: We've barely spoken in weeks.
Jackson: You've barely spoken, or you just don't want to listen.

It wasn't until Jo walked into Station 19 and interacted with Jack that it hit me how good they would've been as a couple. They have a lot in common.

Brain on the Mind - Tall - Grey's Anatomy Season 16 Episode 4

They had pretty decent chemistry too. If not for a non-existant Alex, they would be a better crossover pairing than Vickson.

Why is Justin Chambers so underused this season? Why wasn't he in the midseason finale? You would never think he was a series regular and original cast member the way he goes entire periods without being shown or having little to do.

Jo going to safe haven duty was unwise. We knew it would bring back some of the things that happened with her mother. She had some thoughts about it.

Mer's Mentee- Tall - Grey's Anatomy Season 16 Episode 8

She had to learn not to judge parents who left their baby, and Ben let her know the parents are the ones who adopt the baby. His line about the parents being the ones who haven't found the baby yet was beautiful.

It also was painful to recall later on when Miranda miscarried. He's a wonderful dad to Tuck, and you wanted him to have the experience of raising a child of his own from pampers to college.

The people who gave birth to them don't want him. His parents haven't met him yet.

Ben

He doesn't look at Tuck as anything but his son; Ben is the parent who finds the baby.

A Baby at Station 19 - tall - Grey's Anatomy Season 16 Episode 9

Somehow, Jo missed the memo that babies aren't like puppies. You can't bring one home and hope for the best.

How will Alex react to Jo bringing home an abandoned baby? Link was speechless, but we know Alex won't be.

When the series returns, we're in for another crossover. It'll be a two-hour event. It was set up with a car crashing through Joe's.

You had another girlfriend before the body is barely even cold.

Catherine

Ben will have to put a pin in his grief drinking to help out, and Captain Herrera may end up revealing that his cancer has returned.

Cristina's Package - Tall - Grey's Anatomy Season 16 Episode 9

It'll be a group effort of Seattle's finest doctors and first responders helping out at the scene.

Pardon the pun, but they left us hanging.

Please, hit the comments below, and let's talk about those bombshells.

Bailey's Loss - Tall - Grey's Anatomy Season 16 Episode 9

How devastating is Bailey's miscarriage? Are we still hoping Carina was wrong about the date and that Link is the baby's dad? How will he react?

What is Jo going to do with this baby? Are Catherine and Richard headed for a split?

Do you love the new doc, Hayes? What are your thoughts on Maggie quitting?

Grey's Anatomy Season 16 Episode 9 Quotes

Vic: I'm Victoria Hughes, Station 19.
Catherine: What is that a TV channel?

DeLuca: I didn't know you were coming back today.
Mer: I would've told you, but you were too busy dumping me.
