Black-ish Spinoff Proposed; Who Would Star?

ABC wants a lot more of black-ish on its schedule.

The network is working on a spinoff of the series that would center on one character from the parent series.

That character would be Zoey Johnson and the new entry to the series would follow her as she heads off to college next season.

It would not make sense to follow Zoey off to college in the main series because the show would probably struggle to find a balance between the two narratives.

Yara Shahidi has turned in a stunning performance as the eldest Johnson child for the past three seasons, so she's definitely the best character to have branch out from the main series.

That said, losing the character from the main series would be a huge blow, but there would be opportunity to have the shows cross over.

There's no word yet on whether the shows would be airing together to create a one-hour block.

It will open a lot of storyline potential as viewers get to see just how it all works out for the character.

black-ish has never been a huge hit in the ratings for ABC, but it has been received well with critics and has even managed to win some awards.

Most recently, Tracee Ellis Ross won a Golden Globe Award for her performance as Rainbow Johnson.

The spinoff would kick off as a backdoor pilot on an episode of black-ish this spring, but the project is still in its very early stages.

There's currently no script in place.

However, the chances of this one going to a full series are pretty high.

It was recently revealed that the network is also working on a spinoff of The Goldbergs, but there has been little information on that one.

We'll probably hear more about both projects in the coming months as we get closer to ABC's 2017-2018 schedule being unveiled.

Will that schedule be full of spinoffs?

Possibly.

What do you think about the prospect of a new series in the franchise?
