Blue Bloods Season 12 Episode 1 continued to explore the way the political environment impacts cops.

When there is a wave of violent crime, Mayor Chase takes exception to Frank calling it what it is: an epidemic of felons possessing guns illegally. He thinks that'll drive away tourists when New York is struggling with the aftereffects of the COVID pandemic. Frank tries to impress upon him that it is not enough to give tourists the illusion of safety -- the city must actually be made safe. But Chase isn't having it and sees Frank as interfering with his goals.

Meanwhile, while Witten and Eddie are arresting a man who goes nuts and tries to destroy a convenience store because he can't afford cigarettes, a young Black man accuses them of harassment and hits Witten in the back. When she pulls her gun before Eddie arrests the man, she gets suspended pending an investigation into whether she menaced an unarmed citizen. Eddie goes to see Witten, who insists she's fine but also admits she's had more than enough of the hatred directed toward cops and is considering quitting the force.

Finally, Danny relies on Maggie's psychic abilities to help him solve the murder of a five-year-old boy, while Erin finds herself entangled in a complicated mess when she reopens the murder case that Kim witnessed when she was 13.

A five-year-old boy is shot in a courtyard full of witnesses and no one saw anything.

Danny

Reporter: Is it possible the boys were shot because they were Jewish?
Chase: It's too early to tell.
Frank: But it's also a fair question. We can't rule out any possibilities.
Chase: It's still too early to tell.
