On Madam Secretary Season 6 Episode 9, Elizabeth must deal with a world on the brink of war -- but will she remain President long enough to avert the crisis?

When Elizabeth is called before the Judiciary Committee, she chooses to testify because she believes in democracy even if it comes at the expense of her continued leadership. However, her testimony is interrupted by an emergency situation: China is threatening nuclear war over a conflict in the South China Sea.

Canning is mad that Elizabeth dares leave the hearing to deal with this and claims it is orchestrated. Elizabeth ignore shim. She also decides to try for a diplomatic solution rather than going to war, but President Lee of China won't back down unless Elizabeth removes American ships from the area.

Elizabeth goes to New York to talk to Ambassador Chen and finds out that Lee did not order the initial attack but refuses to be bested by a woman. She finds a solution that works anyway. However, the next day, Canning insists she made up the entire conflict, including the quick resolution, to distract the US from impeaching her.

Meanwhile, Stevie and Dmitri both plan to propose to each other on the same evening.

Elizabeth

Mike: So Beijing seized on a political gray area to shoot at Russian efforts? That's not exactly shocking.
Thompson: True, but surveillance video shows Chinese military buildups on one island in particular: Han un Dou.
Russell: Even saying the name breaks the spell.
Elizabeth: So basically just another beautiful day in the neighborhood.
