Gotham Season 2 Episode 9 Review: A Bitter Pill to Swallow

at .  Updated at .

Forget about Jim and the assassins. Give me more Nygma and Penguin!

Don't get me wrong, Jim fighting off a bunch of crazy assassins was fun, but Nygma's slow dance to bring Penguin out of his despair was the highlight of Gotham Season 2 Episode 9.

What a fun bromance this is going to be!

Though Penguin had asked for Nygma's help at the end of Gotham Season 2 Episode 8, I'm sure he wasn't expecting this. Maybe he just thought he was going to die. I think that's certainly something he would have welcomed.

Instead, he wakes up to find himself in Nygma's home and he is just miserable. He's definitely not the Penguin we know and love. He's a broken man, still reeling from his mother's death, but Nygma has lots of patience and eventually his patience wins out.

I loved Nygma's reaction to himself when he tells Penguin that he has murdered people....like a little kid at Christmas. And he's so proud that he's already killed three people. Penguin isn't too impressed, though,  but it's mostly because he's still wallowing in self pity. But the look on Penguin's face!

Nygma tries everything to bring Penguin around, even kidnapping one of Galavan's lackey's so Penguin could exact some sort of revenge on the guy, but Penguin wants no part of it. He's acting like a petulant child and it isn't until Nygma tells him that it was his mother who caused his weakness that something wakes up in Penguin.

I have to hand it to Nygma. He didn't even flinch when Penguin held the knife to his throat. There's something to be said about that.

I think these two are going to learn a lot from each other.

Jim certainly had a lot on his plate this hour. Tabitha entered a secret club and hired an assassin to kill him. It's amazing that none of these trained killers could take Jim down.  How many did The Lady send his way? Jim is like a superhuman. Maybe it's all that rage inside of him. Or maybe it's just him letting out his dark side.

Did anyone else get a Dark Knight vibe when he almost shot Flamingo in the mouth and did the rebel yell? Jim's already crossed the line so many times, I'm having a hard time believing that he's trying to be this good cop. He should have just killed Flamingo.

But then we wouldn't have got to see Flamingo viciously kill Parks. Where did she come from anyway and wasn't that just an over-the-top gory scene? It was like watching a horror movie with all that blood. The spurting was almost laughable.

Barnes shed a lot of blood too. I really thought he was done for when that I-thought-he-was-dead assassin came back to life and stabbed him in the leg. It was a great way to show the other side of his tough guy act. And while I still think Gordon should have just killed Flamingo, obviously Barnes' war story had some influence on Jim's decision to do the right thing.

Somehow I doubt he's going to stay on the straight and narrow path for long. It's just not in his nature, even if that's what the comics say. And I was a little disappointed that it wasn't Galavan who ordered Tabitha to send assassins after Jim. It was kind of cheap that she did it to avenge Barbara. I knew that they were "together", but I never got the feeling that it was serious, so that whole revelation at the end was kind of lame.

It's about time that Alfred stepped up to be the guardian he's supposed to be instead of just taking orders from the little brat. Kicking Silver out of the house and banning Bruce from seeing her should have happened a long time ago. And I had to laugh when Bruce thought he was pulling the wool over Alfred's eyes by going to bed early. Such a teenage thing to do.

On another note, did anyone else notice Bruce's Bruce Wayne type outfit and slicked back hair? He definitely gave off a future Batman vibe.

I hope he's ready when those crazy monks come for him.

Speaking about the monks, all those monks taking down one lonely security guard at the docks was incredibly ridiculous. There's a joke in there somewhere, I'm sure.

"A Bitter Pill to Swallow" was one of this season's best. Nygma nursing Penguin back to his evilness was the highlight of the hour. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing what havoc these two are going wreak on Gotham.
