The Mysteries of Laura Season 2 Episode 1 Review: The Mystery of the Taken Boy

Never knew I'd hear ass so many times in one sentence.

There's a new captain in town on The Mysteries of Laura Season 2 Episode 1, and she is certainly not making any friends amongst the people at the precinct. To make matters worse, the team had to work against the clock to save a young boy who had been abducted.

Let's not waste anymore time and discuss, "The Mystery of the Taken Boy."

Family Secrets - The Mysteries of Laura

I have a few problems with Nancy Santiani who has taken over as captain. Captain Santiani is already coming off as someone who doesn't know how to read her team. Why would she think it's a good idea to basically have quiet time at the station? This is not how Laura and her team work.

I get Captain Santiani wants to clean up house and wants to prove she means business, but she could at least show the people who work for her some respect as well. To make matters worse she is now going to be the permanent captain at the precinct and nonchalantly tells Jake he needs to go find another place to work – it's like this woman is trying to make enemies.

At least Jake showed how much he respects and cares about the people he works with by ignoring doctors orders and going back to work. Jake immediately threw himself into the case and partnered up with Laura, no questions asked; though I'm pretty sure there are ulterior motives for Jake wanting to work closely with Laura.

It's pretty clear Jake and Laura still have strong feelings for each other, but in the five months since the accident, nothing has been done about said feelings. It was odd hearing Laura talking about all the things she had done for Jake while he was recovering – what woman would do all of the things Laura did for an ex husband if there weren't still some lingering feelings there?

Jake: [after getting out of the car] The DMV does offer a refresher course, free of charge.
Laura: Six years of partnering with Billy and he never once criticized my driving.
Jake: Not to your face.
Laura: Excuse me! I just spent the last five months driving your ass to physical therapy, cooking your ass nightly meals, washing your dirty ass clothes, cleaning your dirty ass bachelor pad and raising your smart ass sons. Have a little respect.
Jake: I have a lot of respect.
Laura: Damn right.

Thankfully they didn't focus on the romance aspect and instead put all their focus on Jake and Laura working together as partners – they do make one hell of a team. While they may bicker with each other from time to time, they also have this mutual respect for one another and it shows when they work together on a case – they help each other out and actually listen to each other.

Speaking of the case, what a crazy and twist-filled ride. As frustrating as it was when the mom, Julia, messed up the hand off, I really couldn't fault her. She wanted to make sure her child was going to get the medicine he needed; though what really angered me was Captain Santiani not listening to Laura when she was trying to tell them the boy, Theo, was in the van.

If Captain Santiani had listened to Laura, they could have quickly gotten Theo from the van and brought him to safety. I don't blame Laura at all for getting angry with the Captain Santiani because the captain is the one who screwed up. Laura didn't know Julia was going to do what she did and Laura intervened to try to protect Julia. Laura did nothing wrong.

At least Laura was smart enough to realize it was Theo's sister who was the key to solving the case and led them directly to a druggie hangout where Theo was being held. It was a touching ending, and I was happy Laura made sure Theo's sister knew it wasn't her fault.

In the end, Jake volunteered to take a demotion to stay with his team which again proved that, despite everything Jake has done, he really is a stand up guy. My only real complain was the lack of relationship development between Billy and Meredith – did everyone forget Meredith kissed Billy? They also could have done with more Max, but I'd easily take a solid hour of his sassy character.

What did you think of the new captain? Will Laura and Jake get back together?
