Blue Bloods Season 8 Episode 9 Review: Pain Killers

Remember when I complained about Frank Reagan always doing battle with the mayor's office?
Well, Blue Bloods Season 8 Episode 9 changed things up...sort of.
Now Frank was doing battle with the governor, and this looked like it could get nasty.
First off, was I the only one who found the governor's voice and mannerisms to be cringe worthy? Every time the man was on the screen he made my skin crawl.
For that reason alone I hope he never returns, but I truly doubt I'll be that lucky.
Previously I had thought there wouldn't be another elected official that annoyed me more than Mayor Dutton. And I hate that she's always half an hour late for everything. That's just rude and disrespectful, especially for someone in a position to demand respect from other.
Where Mayor Dutton appears to be an idealist with not enough experience for the position, the governor comes across as an arrogant bully, more concerned with furthering his career than actually serving the people he was elected to represent.
Frank: You don't get to be the arsonist and the fire fighter.
Governor: What's that mean?
Frank: It means you don't get a big thank you for cleaning up a mess you made.
I couldn't believe that the governor had his State Troopers pull over a van because it had "foreigners" inside. If that's the new standard he's going to have to have every other vehicle in New York City pulled over.
Part of me wanted to hear Frank say to just fire him already and get it over with, but I suppose the show is over once Frank steps down.
There were a couple of upsides to this story. One was that Mayor Dutton wasn't on screen, although the governor turned out to be far worse, and the other was watching Frank and Garrett work with Carlton to try and find a work around...
Carlton: I work for the mayor.
Frank: Me too. Here we are, just a couple of worker bees shooting the breeze.
In the end, the worker bees won the battle, but certainly not the war. Unfortunately there is little doubt that the governor will be back to seek his revenge.
Elsewhere, Baez nearly died from a Fetanyl overdose just from coming in contact with the stuff.
How much scarier does a drug need to get before people stop using it? But I suppose part of being addicted is that all sense and reason goes out the window in search of the next high.
It was hard to come up with any tears of Nigel Lawson's death, after he was such an elitist brat even after his best friend ended up dead.
And the doctor's haughty attitude and inability to admit that over prescribing opioids is at least a part of the overall problem was disheartening.
But the best moment came when Danny admitted how much Baez means to him, even if she was unconscious when he said it.
I probably don't say it enough but you're one hell of a cop and you're one hell of a partner. I really, really need you to wake up. I really can't afford to lose you too.

It was also good to see Danny attempt to give Mr. Stratton a second chance. I'm not sure that the Danny Reagan of two or three years ago would have done that.
Then there was Kenneth Tripp, the newest sex offender on the block.
I was torn over this story.
Kenneth Tripp served his sentence and had the right to live his life, but people also have the right to feel safe.
As much as I wouldn't want a convicted sex offender any where near my family, perhaps it's better to know who and where they are and be able to take precautions.
Better the devil you know than one hiding in plain sight that you might miss.
Because the unfortunate truth is that predators are out there, and we need to take precautions in order to keep ourselves safe.
I didn't agree with Ruiz beating Tripp unconscious, but I could understand Erin not being willing to press charges. The odds of a jury finding in favor of a child sex offender were pretty slim.
The entire case made for one of the most interesting Reagan Sunday family dinners we've had in a while.
Erin saw things from the perspective of the law. Danny saw things from the protective parent's point of view, and Jamie was torn.
But even Frank had to admit he'd do the wrong thing for the right reason, and then pay the consequences...
Nicky: So, given no choice, would you put the welfare of your family above the law?
Frank: Yes, I would.
Danny: Thank you.
Frank: But when the dust settled I would walk down to the local precinct and turn my self in because nobody's above the law, and without the law, nobody is safe.
Drug overdoses, despotic politicians, and child sex offenders made for one serious episode of Blue Bloods.
Which was probably why I was so grateful for this humorous Blue Bloods quote...
Look, I already have a fantasy football team, okay. It's called the Jets and every year I fantasize they're not going to suck.
