Supergirl Season 4 Episode 20 Review: Will The Real Miss Tessmacher Please Stand Up?

at .  Updated at .

How long can a girl be kept in the dark?

We're on the fourth season and Lena still doesn't know that Kara is Supergirl!

There have been so many close-call situations, several on Supergirl Season 4 Episode 20 alone, yet Supergirl somehow manages to maneuver them without revealing her identity to one of her best friends.

Tessmacher Sets a Trap - Supergirl

And she finally came so close. Kara took off her glasses and was about to tell Lena the truth.

I kept screaming "turn around Lena," but alas, the moment was ruined by Lena inadvertently guilt tripping Kara.

Understandably, Lena is in a fragile headspace after being betrayed by Tess and Lex.

Must be strange to have a sibling with superpowers, huh?

Alex

Finding out that her only stable friend has also been lying straight to her face day in and day out might have sent her off the deep end.

But she deserves to know!

And think of how much easier everything would be if Lena wasn't always worrying about Kara!

Mr. President, Can We Talk? - Supergirl Season 4 Episode 20

Since they are working so closely together, Lena getting clued into Kara's alter-ego would allow them to accomplish so much more.

Initially, Lena would be angry, but I think she'd be astute enough to realize the difference between Kara's lies and Lex and Tess' lies.

Kara has kept her identity a secret to protect her loved ones.

And in continuing to lie, she's doing what she thinks is best for Lena. There's nothing menacing about her actions.

Testing - Supergirl Season 4 Episode 20

That doesn't go for Lex and Tess who purposefully lied to Lena to hurt and undermine her.

If Kara came clean to Lena on the plane, she'd still have the upper hand in revealing her secret as she wishes.

Lena will be ten times more upset if she finds out by accident. For example, when she's saving Kara from the White House.

Can you believe President Baker revealed his true alliance to team anti-alien by abducting Kara after she provided him with all her findings on the Red Daughter?

The Proof - Supergirl Season 4 Episode 20

He didn't even look at the evidence because he already knew everything she was telling him.

Thankfully, Kara lied when he asked her if she's shared her findings with anyone else.

Lena knew because she was on the mission with Kara and James Olsen got clued in shortly after.

Start with James Olsen because I would like to know how the hell he got superpowers.

Ben Lockwood

Both of them will undoubtedly figure out that Kara is missing.

And James has the power of the press beside him.

It really isn't all that surprising that Baker has aligned with the anti-alien party.

Considering Baker's Chief of Staff authorized experimentation on aliens to give them superpowers, I don't understand why Kara assumed that maybe Baker wasn't in on it as well.

And Lena should have bee more aware considering the government, with Baker in tow, urged her to develop the serum to arm their soldiers with it.

Does Anyone Else Know? - Supergirl Season 4 Episode 20

However, the fact that he'd sign off on the abduction of a journalist and citizen is shocking because it means he's dirtier than we assumed.

Especially because I don't think he knows Kara is Supergirl.

For starters, he wanted to crack Supergirl's identity using the DEO.

Kara also didn't display any symptoms after being exposed to the Kryptonite.

Lena: Lex has created the very thing he fears most. Kryptonian weapon trained as a killer. And in Lex's hands, it's more dangerous than an atomic bomb. And he has it pointed right at America.
Kara: She is not an "it." Lex may have molded her but there has to be some part of Supergirl still in her.

And because there's Kryptonite surrounding her, I don't think Supergirl will be able to retaliate and free herself.

Based on the previews, we know Kara comes face-to-face with the Red Daughter.

It's possible that she'll be able to "reprogram" the Red Daughter by persuading her to turn on Lex.

I'd be interested to see what would happen if there were two Supergirl's on one team.

I Have Something For You - Supergirl Season 4 Episode 20

As Kara pointed out, there has to be some good in her if she's a copy of Supergirl.

Then, we have the little Ben Lockwood problem.

Kara and Lena's journey to Kaznia was justified and necessary to figure out how to stop Lex Luthor, but I could not believe that Alex and Colonel Haley were both missing in action when they invoked martial law.

Their absence allowed Ben Lockwood to go completely rogue.

Brainy tried his best to stop the deranged Secretary but he didn't stand much of a chance despite his best efforts.

Eventually, Lockwood's anger over his wife's death got the best of him, and he injected himself with the serum he stole from Lena's lab.

That's the Right Thing - Supergirl Season 4 Episode 20

If you though Lockwood was scary without powers, you haven't seen anything yet.

But power doesn't just come from within, it comes from your allies who are supporting you and standing by your side.

Brainy, Dreamer, James Olsen, and even the Martian Manhunter all teamed up to take down Lockwood, who was fighting solo after all of his men turned their backs on him for barking orders that were unconstitutional.

His baseless anger will be the end of him, and he won't have anyone to blame but himself.

Yes, an alien killed his wife, but it wasn't an unprovoked attack. The alien was retaliating at Lockwood for destroying her family.

Lockwood is the creator of this violence and hatred.

Lex Did What? - Supergirl Season 4 Episode 20

Even his son was able to see the truth and turned against him.

He knows that the hatred his father is spewing is only making human and alien relations worse.

And there's absolutely no reason why Lockwood is targeting many of these innocent aliens.

There's only one way to stop him: death.

I hope his son is going to be his undoing.

Just imagine his reaction when he finds out his father turned himself into the very thing he's hated most.

Giving humans superpowers levels the playing field, sure, but it also makes human no different than aliens.

As for Eve Tesschmacher, her inclusion in the episode as Kopy was entertaining, but it was merely a distraction for all the important discoveries Lena and Kara were making.

I'm Not Ready - Supergirl Season 4 Episode 20

Alex's adoption storyline was a similar distraction.

To my earlier point, Alex should not have been allowed to leave the DEO without a leader during such dangerous times.

I'm all for Alex starting a family, but there's too much going on right now.

And I'm mostly frustrated with the adoption storyline because it keeps coming out of nowhere.

Alex's desire for a family was put on the backburner until suddenly, she had 12 hours to decide if she wanted to be a mother.

The time she spent deciding was used as a soft introduction to the possibility of Alex and Kelly, and by the end of the hour, Alex was back to square one when the mother decided to keep her baby after all.

You're Going to be a Great Mom - Supergirl Season 4 Episode 20

What was the whole point of taking Alex away from work and getting her hopes up only to have them shattered?

Seeing how invested Kelly was in helping Alex through the process of motherhood, I'm willing to bet the writers are going to bring them closer together and they'll eventually decide to adopt together.

Kelly: You care too much to fail, Alex. And you are going to be an amazing mother.
Alex: Did anyone ever tell you you should be a shrink?
Kelly: Mmm, once or twice.

I couldn't help but notice how Alex's ears perked up when Kelly referred to her ex as a "she."

Kelly seems like a good love interest for Alex. She's no Maggie, but there's definitely chemistry.

Other National City Musings

  • Lena did not look qualified to land a pilot-less plane. I'd never get on a plane after that.

  • Is no one concerned about finding Supergirl? Last I checked, she's still public enemy number one. Ben Lockwood only seemed concerned with stopping Dreamer.

  • Why did Kara go back and burn all the photos showing her and Supergirl side-by-side if the building was going to blow up regardless?
