Supergirl Season 5 Episode 1 Review: Event Horizon

at .  Updated at .

Let's get the obvious out of the way.

Yes, Kara's suit now has pants. Yes, they are amazing and all we have ever wanted these past four years.

However, they were not the most surprising development on Supergirl Season 5 Episode 1.

Kara Danvers - Supergirl Season 5 Episode 1

There was a dark cloud that loomed over this episode. That cloud being Lena's need for revenge after finding out Kara is Supergirl on last season's finale.

Lena's use of the new virtual reality contact lenses that newcomer Andrea Rojas' company produced is disturbing, to say the least. She states that she does not want to hurt Kara physically, but her simulations say otherwise.

Lena is proving to be quite the Luthor, even blaming her vengeful attitude on her forsaken name.

Kara, on the other hand, is filled with guilt over not telling Lena the entire episode.

Kara Danvers 3 - Supergirl Season 5 Episode 1

Now, Kara is not innocent either. She has spent the last three seasons lying to her best friend, which is never okay.

However, maybe it was just Melissa Benoist's performance in the scene where Kara confesses to Lena her secret, but you cannot help to feel bad for Kara.

I'm Supergirl. I've always been Supergirl. I should've told you so long ago, I know that. I just kept making excuses because you've been hurt so many times. And, I convinced myself that I was protecting you and then one day you were so angry with me, with Supergirl, but you still loved Kara. And I just kept thinking, if I could be Kara, just Kara, then I could keep you as a friend. I was selfish and scared and I didn't want to lose you. So, I kept pretending and I never stopped. And every time I kept my secret from you I wasn't protecting you, I was hurting you just like everyone else and I am so so sorry. I am so sorry.

Kara

We see that this secret has been tearing her apart, not only in this episode but also on the last season.

She has wanted to tell Lena about Supergirl, but something has always held her back. We finally understood her reasoning on Supergirl Season 5 Episode 1.

After Lena's speech where she had seemingly forgiven her, it all felt too good to be true. All of this buildup that leads to a perfect ending? I don't think so.

By the end of the hour, Lena, of course, had secretly not forgiven Kara. It makes one wonder what lengths she will go to exact her revenge.

James Olsen - Supergirl Season 5 Episode 1

James had a quiet, blink-and-you-miss-it storyline on this episode.

Him quitting CatCo seemed a bit sudden, but given that Mehcad Brooks is leaving sometime this season, the writers are probably rushing to send him out with a nice end to his story.

Andrea: You'll never work as a journalist again.
James: That's part of the adventure.

Does this mean he will become the Guardian full time? Or does his adventure include predictably moving away to another town, never to be seen again? Time will tell.

J'onn Jones - Supergirl Season 5 Episode 1

Speaking of James quitting, the new CatCo boss, Andrea Rojas, is proving to be quite the piece of work.

But, is she wrong? What she was saying about getting "clicks", and viewers were not the most horrible things a Supergirl character has ever said. They do need viewers to run CatCo, and Kara and James were not coming up with better ways to do so.

That's just our consumer reality today, which will probably tie in with the scary technology storyline this season.

Also, given that Andrea has a comic book villain alter ego, I'm sure her spitfire personality and monetary-driven vision will not be the only thing getting under our heroes' skins.

CatCo and journalism isn’t all that you are. You started helping people long before Dad put that camera in your hands. And, look, I know that you think that you have to muscle your way through everything. But, for once, just take a step back and ask, what does James Olsen want?

Kelly

Andrea is not the only one to worry about, J'onn's Green Martian brother that we saw on Supergirl Season 4 Episode 22 showed up and shapeshifted into many things before confronting J'onn.

He is angry at both J'onn and their father for some reason, but J'onn had no idea he even existed.

Is this a case of Dad had an illegitimate son that no one knew about and now said son is angry and jealous and wants revenge? Or have I watched too much television? Probably the second, but you never know!

Kara, J'onn, and James - Supergirl Season 5 Episode 1

Why are there always so many villains? Even on other Arrowverse shows this seems to be the case.

We have Andrea, J'onn's brother, Midnight, Eve (who made a short appearance at the end of the premiere), possibly Lena, and whoever the Crisis is going to bring.

That is just too much going on. Can we go back to one villain per season? Thank you.

Kelly Olsen - Supergirl Season 5 Episode 1

Let's move on to more positive things, like all the love that's happening this season.

We've got Alex and Kelly and Brainy and Nia, both relationships that were teased on last season's finale.

Alex and Kelly are super cute, but there was not much development on this episode. There is sure to be some drama coming their way because couples cannot be happy forever on television.

Nia Nal - Supergirl Season 5 Episode 1

Brainy and Nia on the other hand, who are adorably awkward, were having some intimacy problems.

Brainy: Strong enough to destroy all life across three solar systems. But we face an even graver problem. Supergirl’s cape has been destroyed.
Alex: Oh, yes, well totally forgot about the risk to life across three solar systems.
Brainy: This is no time for sarcasm!

We later find out that it is a result of Brainy's trauma from treating Nia horribly when he got reprogrammed. Of course, Nia reassures him that he is a good person and they kiss.

Again, they are happy by the end of the episode. It probably will not last for too long no matter how perfect they are for one another.

Brainy 2 - Supergirl Season 5 Episode 1

William Day, a British journalist, showed up at Catco -- another new face, another new person to annoy Kara.

Seriously, where is Cat Grant when you need her?

Also, please, please do not let William be a love interest for Kara. That is the last thing the show needs right now -- an enemies-to-lovers trope.

Especially since Kara is going to have to deal with Lena's quest for revenge, her new boss somehow turning into an evil villain, whatever is happening with Eve and Leviathan, a Green Martian invading her city, and the Crisis coming later this season, she has enough on her plate.

Kara Danvers2 - Supergirl Season 5 Episode 1

So, Supergirl Fanatics, what did you think of the Supergirl Season 5 premiere?

Will Lena forgive Kara before giving into her dark side?

Also, how good is Melissa Benoist? The Academy, please stop sleeping on CW actors.

Alex: Oh, yes, well totally forgot about the risk to life across three solar systems.
Brainy: This is no time for sarcasm!

Kid: Thanks Supergirl! When I grow up, I want to be just like you.
Kara: Well that's easy, you just have to fight for what’s right and always tell the truth.
Lena: Always tell the truth, that’s rich.
Kara: Miss Luthor, is everything alright?
Lena: Why so formal? I thought we were best friends, Kara.
