The kids come in as Jack and Rebecca are dancing and Jack is getting ready for work. The Challenger is about to go up.

Later we see both pregnant Rebecca and older Rebecca. Rebecca is making a cake for the Big Three.

Randall gets people bringing him birthday cake and an email that the home robbery suspect was caught.

Kevin is holding the twins and wishing himself a happy birthday before getting them ready to take to Madison. He's brought back her air fryer. She's got another one for his birthday. There is some awkward banter about Madison jilting Kevin.

Toby Facetimes Kate to wish her a happy birthday and let her know he's arranged for childcare. Also he has 24 seconds to talk to her.

Deja and Tess don't pay attention to Beth rambling about the love letters Randall used to send her. He comes home and tells her they caught the robber and that they recovered one of their wedding pictures. He wants to go to the arraignment even though it's his birthday. Beth says that behind door one is his sexy wife and behind door #2 is confronting the creeper who broke into their home. Randall insists on going to the arraignment.

Back to 1986. Kevin is throwing spitballs as the teacher puts on the Challenger liftoff. We see the broadcast up until the explosion. The teacher hurries to turn it off and runs out of the room.

Nicky isn't happy to be on a baby train with the kids, Rebecca, and Miguel. He needs to stalk Sally on Facebbok. Rebecca starts telling a story about being a little girl on the train but she can't remember the word caboose.

Kate has enjoyed her massage. She finds it weird that Toby didn't do an in person gesture this year. She gets a text from Philip saying there is an emergency at the school.

Kevin goes to see the director of Manny, who has counted every day since Kevin torpedoed his show. Kevin is sure this meeting was forced. The director tells him they want to reboot the Manny. They want him to play the dad.  Kevin is not interested.

Randall goes to the arraignment. Afterward he asks the guard to speak with the defendant. The guard voted for Randall and doesn't mind.  The defendant realizes Randall is the guy from the picture.

Back in 1986, Jack comes home and hugs Rebecca. Rebecca is worried about the kids. They try to talk to the kids about the explosion. Kate says all the teachers were crying but at least the astronauts were closer to heaven when they died. Randall is silently sad. Kevin wants more mac and cheese.

In the present, Kevin returns and finds a guy named Elijah with Madison helping clean up. They talk about the book and Kevin clearly has no clue what they are talking back. Elijah compliments Kevin's acting in a movie. Elijah offers to help clean up. Kevin seems jealous.

The robber claims not to remember breaking into Randall's house. He asks for water. Randall tells him that this was a terrifying moment for his family. The guy says he is sorry and asks what happened to his dog. He didn't know where he got the picture from. He asks again about his dog.

Kate walks in and hears Philip arguing with a woman he wants to break up with. He tells her she is boring to him. Kate comes in as Jess leaves. Philip says that was not the emergency he called her about. He has a surprise for her: the kids have prepared a song for her birthday.

On the train Rebecca is looking upset. She recalls walking the train with her father but she still can't remember the word caboose. Then she recalls reading a book to the Big Three but still can't remember the word caboose.

In 1986, Rebecca comes to talk to Randall in his room. Randall doesn't want to talk so she leaves again. Randall says the astronaut teacher who died has kids. Is someone making them dinner? Rebecca is sure their dad is. Randall thinks they should send them mac and cheese just in case.

Beth can't believe Randall bailed out the robber. Randall says he wants to help the guy get a bed in a shelter tonight. He saw his file and now he feels guilty about all the addicts who are like his mom and who he isn't doing enough for. Beth says okay I'll give you one more shot at this birthday genie wish thing. She tells Randall he is the real thing. Men can have so many vices but he just wants to help people. If that SOB doesn't show up tonight she's gonna lose it, but he is an incredibly decent man. She asks him to make a birthday wish.

At the party, Rebecca is standing around trying to remember the word caboose while everyone is setting up. She bursts out THE RED ONE DAMN IT

Everyone is concerned. Rebecca didn't want to tell them til after their birthday but she got the PET scan back and there are plaques building in her brain. But it's still early days.

Little Kevin is watching TV.  Jack comes to sit with him. He didn't like to talk much as a kid either. But does Kevin want to talk about today? Kevin says it was just a story on TV. It wasn't real.

Kevin comes to see Madison after the party and Elijah is still there. They skipped ahead to the next episode of the show Kevin was watching  with Madison. Elijah realizes he should go. Kevin apologizes after Elijah leaves. He fixates on the show Madison watched without him. He admits eventually it was a bad day, bad news about Rebecca. Madison is so sorry. Kevin doesn't like that Elijah calls Madison Maddie. Maybe everyone was right that he shouldn't stay in her garage.

Jack and Rebecca worry about whether they handled this right. She is especially worried about Kevin. Jack says Kevin's brain is protecting itself. As Jack is saying Kevin will grow up and have it all figured out, Kevin goes to see Kate. Rebecca says Randall is too good for the world. She starts talking about Catcher in the Rye. Holden had to accept that he can't protect all the innocent children, and that's Randall. In the present, Randall goes to the shelter to wait for the robber.

Kevin tells Kate that when they were growing up, Mom and Dad were always a bedroom away and his kids won't have that. He's gonna take the Manny reboot so the kids can have stability. He can't believe that Rebecca is really deteriorating.  Kate encourages him.

Rebecca tells Nicky to stop complaining about Sally. Life is too short. If he wants to see Sally, they should go see her.

Randall comes home. The man never showed up. It's official. He's old. Beth has a gift for him. But Randall still feels he needs to do more for the people who are hurting in this city.

Kate looks at the pictures from the school and gets a text from Toby.  She turns around and he's there.

Little Kevin crawls into bed with Kate and says Mom and Dad will die one day.

Rebecca is looking at her PET scan. She is still trying to remember the word caboose. She remembers it finally and says it to Miguel.
