This Is Us Season 5 Episode 13 focuses on Randall and Kevin's difficult conversation about the problems between them and Randall's unhappy childhood.

Beth takes the girls for the day so that Kevin and Randall can talk. At first, they make small talk, but Kevin realizes they need to talk about the big things and not avoid the subject anymore. He tries to apologize to Randall for not standing up for him when that racist guy didn't want Randall taking his daughter to prom. Randall is irritated. He feels Kevin is not taking responsibility for his own actions and thinks one incident is the whole problem. He thinks that is performative, that Kevin just wants to make himself feel good.

Kevin is upset and follows Randall out of the house. They get locked out and Kevin can't get to his phone when it rings. They end up going to a neighbor's to get a spare key and argue outside of her presence.

Randall tries to explain to Kevin that it isn't that he hates his adoptive family and it's not that he is ungrateful. He tells Kevin that he always used to imagine that the weatherman and the librarian -- the only Black adults he knew -- were his birth family, but he couldn't even have that fantasy because he felt guilty and ended up including his adoptive family in it.

Meanwhile, in the past, Jack takes Randall and Kevin to see Mr. Rogers in person, and in college Randall and Kevin get into a fight because Randall sees Kevin's treatment of a cab driver as racist.

This Is Us Season 5 Episode 13 Quotes

Kevin: Listen I don't want to beat around the bush.
Randall: Water?
Kevin: I'm fine. Look, I feel like it would be easy for us to fall into catching up and get back into our rhythm without really talking. And I can't let that happen. Randall, there are some things I have to say to you.
Randall: Right. So here we go.

Beth: I wasn't finished.
Randall: What?
Beth: You know I like to drink the milk out of the cereal.
Randall: Sorry.
Beth: Randall, I know that Kevin's visit has you on edge, but let's not let the sweet, sweet milk suffer for it.
